Our latest journey took us to Houston, Galveston, and Kemah, where we enjoyed a mix of Texas history, holiday cheer, and waterfront beauty. From the Galveston Ferry to Midtown Houston and beyond, this adventure was filled with exciting discoveries and special family moments.
Ferry to Galveston and the San Jacinto Museum
Our trip began with a scenic ferry ride to Galveston, a thrilling experience for the kids as they watched seagulls soar alongside the boat and dolphins swim in the bay. From there, we set off for our first destination: the San Jacinto Museum and Monument. Standing tall at 567 feet, this monument is a breathtaking tribute to Texas history. Inside the museum, we immersed ourselves in the story of the Battle of San Jacinto, gaining a deeper appreciation for this pivotal moment in Texas independence.
(Side note: The battleship display is currently missing as it has been relocated to Galveston for repairs, leaving only an empty bay.)
Adult tickets were $14 each, and children ages 4-11 were $6 each. Overall, this was a great educational experience, and great for family budgets. The kids loved the interactive exhibits and the elevator ride to the observation deck. We all left feeling inspired by the resilience and determination of those who fought for freedom.
Holiday Cheer at Levy Park
Next, we ventured into downtown Houston to visit Levy Park, where the Gingerbread House contest was taking place. Although we arrived a bit late to fully enjoy the contest, the park itself was a delightful stop. The kids had a blast exploring the playground, and we stumbled upon a vibrant red double-decker bus—a perfect photo op! To top it off, the kiddos climbed onto Santa’s sleigh for a festive family picture. Even without the contest in full swing, Levy Park’s lively atmosphere and thoughtful design made it a highlight of our day.
Downtown Houston: Lights and Reflections
After Levy Park, we drove to Downtown Houston to admire the city’s towering buildings. At City Hall, we were greeted by a park illuminated with dazzling lights, creating a magical scene against the urban backdrop. It was a moment of awe and wonder for all of us, a reminder of the beauty that can be found in bustling cityscapes.
As we explored Midtown, we also encountered several homeless encampments. This was a sobering sight and an opportunity to have an open and compassionate conversation with our children about the challenges many people face. We hope to encourage empathy and understanding as we navigate these real-life experiences together.
Kemah Boardwalk and the Christmas Boat Parade
The day continued with a drive to Kemah Boardwalk, where we joined the festive crowd for the annual Boat Christmas Parade. Watching the boats glide across the bay adorned with twinkling lights was pure magic. The Boardwalk itself offered so much to do, from thrilling rides to mouthwatering food options. We chose Pizza Oven for dinner, indulging in a classic pepperoni pizza and the standout Roasted Chicken pizza, which was absolutely delicious. This stop was a perfect blend of holiday joy and coastal charm.
A Perfect End to the Day
As the night grew late, we made our way back to Galveston to catch the ferry to Bolivar Peninsula. The return trip was peaceful, giving us a chance to reflect on the day’s adventures. It had been a day filled with exploration, laughter, and cherished family memories.
If you’re planning a budget-friendly visit to Houston, we highly recommend these stops to visit. It offers a wonderful mix of history, culture, and holiday magic—a perfect way to create unforgettable moments with your loved ones.
