Our family recently enjoyed an exciting afternoon adventure at the Galveston Naval Museum, located in Seawolf Park in Galveston, TX. If you’re looking for a detailed Galveston Naval Museum review, you’re in the right place! This outing was not only educational but also a budget-friendly way to spend the day exploring history up close. Here’s a recap of our experience and why we think it’s a must-visit destination for families!
The Journey Begins
The day started with a scenic Galveston ferry ride from the Bolivar Peninsula—an experience that’s almost as fun as the destination itself. The kids always love riding the ferry—spotting seagulls and the occasional dolphin is a treat in itself! Once we arrived in Galveston, we drove to Seawolf Park, where we paid $10 for parking. The park itself is a serene and picturesque location, with views of the bay adding to the adventure.
Stepping Back in Time at the Museum
After parking, we walked over to the museum entrance. Tickets were $13 for adults and $9 for children—making this a budget friendly adventure for the family.
Exploring the USS Cavalla
Our first stop was the USS Cavalla, a World War II submarine with a storied history. Known for sinking the Japanese aircraft carrier Shōkaku during the Battle of the Philippine Sea, the Cavalla offers a fascinating glimpse into naval life during wartime.
We were able to walk on the submarine’s deck before heading below to explore the crew’s quarters. Inside, we found bunk beds, a compact kitchen, and a dining area complete with checkerboards and backgammon sets. The displays showcased personal items from the crew, adding a human touch to the experience. The kids were captivated by the dials, switches, and mechanisms—it truly felt like stepping into another world. The tight quarters gave us all a new appreciation for the sailors who served aboard the submarine. Chico kept hitting his head walking through the sub, so if you’re taller, you might want to duck and channel your inner submarine crew member—ready to maneuver through tight quarters at all times!
Discovering the USS Stewart
Next, we explored the USS Stewart, a WWII escort ship. The ship’s deck provided stunning views of the bay, and we ventured inside to see areas such as the kitchen, mess hall, and bunk rooms. The kiddos each picked out a bunk they would have claimed as their own, with lively debates over who got the top bunks versus the cozier lower ones. It was hilarious to see them imagining life as sailors, complete with their own ‘battle stations.’ The “war room” and captain’s quarters were particularly intriguing, offering insight into the ship’s operations.
The kids were especially impressed by the massive guns on the deck and the displays of ammunition. One highlight was learning that the museum hosts overnight sleepovers aboard the ship—an idea our kids found thrilling!
Exploring the Museum Yard
The museum’s outdoor exhibits include additional naval artifacts, such as a smaller submarine. While we couldn’t go inside these items, they were still fascinating to see and learn about. The museum’s efforts to preserve and showcase these pieces of history are commendable.
Fun at Seawolf Park
After our museum tour, we spent some time enjoying the amenities at Seawolf Park. The kids loved playing on the playground, and we were lucky enough to spot dolphins jumping in the bay. It was a perfect way to unwind after an afternoon of exploration. We enjoyed a stroll around the park before making our way back to the parking lot.
