A year ago, we packed up our lives, jumped in the RV, and set off on a journey that promised adventure, freedom, and a chance to explore the unknown. What we didn’t expect was just how transformative this experience would be. Life on the road has been more than a series of scenic views and postcard-worthy moments—it’s been a crash course in adaptability, simplicity, and connection.
Through the highs and lows, we’ve learned lessons that have reshaped how we see the world, our family, and ourselves. In this post, we’re sharing the most unexpected takeaways from our year of RV living. Whether you’re considering a similar journey or simply looking for inspiration to embrace change, these insights will give you a glimpse of how life on the road can change you in the best possible ways.
1. Strengthening Family Bonds
When we set out on our year-long RV journey, we anticipated seeing new places, embracing adventure, and creating lasting memories. What we didn’t fully realize was how this lifestyle would bring our family closer than ever before. Living in tight quarters and sharing the highs and lows of travel forced us to communicate better, solve problems together, and find joy in the simple moments.
From working as a team to get ready for travel days to laughing over campfire dinners, every experience has been a reminder of how much we rely on each other. The absence of daily distractions like work commutes, busy schedules, and digital noise gave us the space to focus on what truly matters—our relationships. Of course, there were challenges (cue the occasional sibling squabble or cabin fever), but learning to navigate those moments helped us grow stronger as a unit. This journey has taught us that being present with each other is the greatest gift we can give.
2. Embracing Minimalism
One of the most unexpected joys of RV living was discovering the freedom of living with less. With limited space, we were forced to make intentional choices about what to pack and what to leave behind. This shift to minimalism brought surprising clarity and a focus on quality over quantity.
Live life a little simpler
Every item we brought had to earn its place, whether it was a piece of clothing, a kitchen tool, or a family keepsake. We quickly learned that choosing fewer, high-quality items made life simpler and more satisfying. The toughest decisions—letting go of sentimental clutter or deciding what toys the kids could keep—ultimately taught us to value experiences over possessions.
We would like to instill this in our children as they grow up. In a world of consumption, we find it important to live a little simpler life. While we are still navigating and embracing this, it has been a very freeing experience. For anyone considering this lifestyle, our advice is to start small: prioritize the essentials, pack versatile items, and embrace the unexpected joy of simplicity.
3. Discovering Hidden Gems
One of the greatest rewards of life on the road has been uncovering the magic of lesser-known destinations. While iconic landmarks are breathtaking, the true charm often lies in the unexpected: a quiet lakeside campsite, a cute historical small-town square, or a spontaneous hike leading to a stunning view.
These hidden gems have taught us to slow down and appreciate the journey, not just the destination. Along the way, we’ve met welcoming locals eager to share their stories and tips, making these stops even more memorable. In our most recent adventure—Discovering Columbus, TX—we learned fascinating facts about the town’s history and its role in Texas’ statehood from a few of the locals we encountered. These moments remind us that life’s most precious treasures are often off the beaten path.
4. Adapting to Change
Traveling full-time has its fair share of surprises—and not all of them are pleasant. From sudden weather changes to RV breakdowns and unexpected detours, we’ve faced our share of challenges. But through it all, we’ve learned the art of adaptability.
Breakdowns Happen
In October this year, we found ourselves in a predicament when the ATS switch in our RV went out. We were unable to get the RV to connect to shore power, which quickly drained our battery. We struggled to get the RV slides back in before getting it into a service center in Iowa for repair. With our RV under repair for several weeks, we had to come up with a plan B for a place to stay. We ended up finding some beautiful Airbnb gems in the Ozarks of MO that we traveled to until the RV was ready to get back on the road. What could have been viewed as a disaster turned into a fun family memory!
Every hurdle has been an opportunity to grow. We’ve learned to stay calm under pressure, approach problems with a solutions-focused mindset, and laugh at the inevitable mishaps. Teaching our kids these lessons in real-time has been invaluable. Our top tip for staying flexible? Keep a positive attitude, have a backup plan, and always carry a sense of humor—it’ll get you through anything.
5. Rediscovering Nature
Spending more time immersed in the great outdoors has profoundly impacted our family. With each sunset hike, starlit evening, or encounter with wildlife, we’ve developed a deeper connection to nature. These moments have not only rejuvenated our minds and bodies but have also instilled a newfound respect for the environment.
We’ve watched our kids’ curiosity flourish as they explored tide pools, identified different insects, and marveled at breathtaking views. For us, this journey has been a reminder of the peace and wonder that nature offers—a gift we’ll cherish long after our travels end.
6. The Power of Community
One of the most surprising and heartwarming aspects of RV life has been the sense of community we’ve found on the road. Whether it’s sharing tips with fellow travelers, swapping stories around a campground fire, or receiving help from kind strangers, we’ve felt supported every step of the way.
The RV community is filled with people eager to connect and help, creating a network that feels like an extended family. We’ve learned that asking for advice or joining local meetups can lead to lifelong friendships. Our favorite tool for networking has been using apps that connect travelers or exploring social media groups—the connections we’ve made have enriched our journey immeasurably. We also recently joined the Full Time Families group and are excited to participate in upcoming meetups with other fellow traveling families.
7. Unexpected Joys in Education
Traveling has transformed learning into an adventure for our kids. From exploring historical landmarks to learning about the importance of environmental protection, they’ve experienced education in a way that no classroom can replicate. For instance, when visiting South Padre Island National Seashore, we learned more about the tide direction in the Gulf and saw firsthand the garbage carried up to the shore in the park. The impact we are having on the ocean is truly horrific and has made us more mindful of the items we use and dispose of.
These experiences have expanded their understanding of the world and ignited their curiosity. We’ll never forget their excitement when visiting a NASA space museum or their awe at watching marine life from a ship. For families considering this lifestyle, incorporating museums, cultural events, and local history into your travels will create unforgettable learning opportunities.
8. Appreciating Time and Moments
Above all, this journey has taught us the true value of time. The constant rush of daily life has been replaced with a focus on the present. Instead of hurrying from one task to the next, we’ve learned to savor quiet mornings, spontaneous adventures, and heartfelt conversations.
This slower pace has allowed us to build deeper connections with each other and appreciate the beauty of life’s simple pleasures. It’s a lesson we’ll carry with us always: time together is the greatest treasure of all.
This lifestyle has taught us to cherish each other, embrace uncertainty, and find joy in simplicity. The challenges we’ve faced have become lessons in resilience, and the connections we’ve made have reminded us of the power of community and kindness. Most of all, we’ve learned to live with intention, savoring every moment as it comes.
While our year of travel may be ending, the lessons and memories will stay with us forever, guiding us into whatever the next chapter holds. We’re excited to continue exploring, growing, and finding new ways to appreciate the journey—on and off the road.
