If you’re looking for an unforgettable adventure in Missouri’s Lake of the Ozarks, Ha Ha Tonka State Park is a hidden gem you won’t want to miss. This unique park is home to remarkable natural scenery, hiking trails, and, most intriguingly, the ruins of a 1900s European-style estate that has come to be known as a “castle.”
The Castle Ruins
Perched atop a beautiful bluff in one of Missouri’s most scenic parks, the “castle” ruins of Ha Ha Tonka are what’s left of a once-grand European-style mansion. Built by Kansas City businessman Robert McClure Snyder, the estate includes the remnants of the main house, a carriage house, and a large water tower. Walking through these ruins offers a peek into history and stirs the imagination of what the site once looked like in its prime.
Our Adventure Begins
We started our visit from the lower parking area, taking a paved path that winds its way up to the castle ruins. (For those who need it, there’s also an upper parking area reserved for elderly and disabled visitors.)
It was a gorgeous 80-degree day in fall, with the leaves just beginning to change. Our first stop was an overlook that offered breathtaking views of a cavern with an arm of the Lake of the Ozarks below. From this vantage point, we could catch glimpses of the castle ruins perched above, adding an element of mystery and excitement to our visit.
Uncovering the History
One fascinating piece of history we learned was about a devastating fire that struck in 1942. The main house was badly damaged, and embers from the blaze even spread to the carriage house, igniting its roof. The estate, once lively and grand, now stands as a solemn reminder of its vibrant past.
Reaching the Top of the Bluff
As we continued up the hill, the path was dotted with lookouts, each revealing another stunning view of the park. Reaching the bluff where the main home once stood, we were taken aback by the incredible vista of the Lake of the Ozarks below. With autumn leaves adding color to the landscape, it was easy to see why Snyder chose this location—it’s simply breathtaking.
Though the mansion now stands in ruins, the stonework and architecture offer a glimpse of its former splendor. The towering walls and empty windows give it a slightly eerie, yet beautiful, atmosphere, lending a sense of timelessness to the site.
The Water Tower
After exploring the castle ruins, we made our way back down to check out the park’s historic water tower. Unlike the house, the water tower remains largely intact, with a restored roof, giving visitors a peek into the past when it housed the estate’s caretakers.
Hiking Trails Galore!
One of the highlights of Ha Ha Tonka State Park is its network of trails, each offering a unique view or natural feature. Every path we took led us to a new discovery, and the kids were thrilled to explore.
We took the boardwalk from the water tower to the Natural Land Bridge, a large cavern-like formation that leads into a yellow trail. This was one of our favorite spots—the kids loved posing for pictures and exploring the unique rock formations beneath the “bridge.”
As we followed the yellow trail, we encountered beautiful stone steps and towering rock walls. (A word of caution: watch out for random railroad nails along the trail! I managed to trip on one, much to everyone’s amusement!)
With the sun beginning to dip lower, we headed back toward the boardwalk and decided to try the red trail. Rated for its difficulty, this trail lived up to its reputation with what felt like hundreds of steps leading down to the lake. We started down but quickly realized the return journey would be a workout, so we decided to turn back.
Wrapping Up Our Day
After a full day of exploring, we made our way back to the boardwalk and down to the parking area, tired but happy. The kids had a blast hiking, climbing, and taking in the park’s natural beauty, and we all agreed that the castle ruins added a unique and magical touch to our adventure. Ha Ha Tonka State Park truly is a hidden treasure in Missouri, and we were thrilled to discover it.
